The base for the sculpture is a live edge piece of locally sourced Black Cherry and a Birch dowel is used as a mounting post, but the base is far from the important part. The main body is carved from a billet of Crepe Myrtle Burl and has absolutely stunning figure in it. Ranging from a pale cream colour, to a burnished gold, to a spectrum of browns and swirls of black spalting, every time I look at it I see something new. There is curly grain running through the whole body, and burled figure situated chiefly in the top 3rd, the whole thing has been polished to a lustre so you can stare at it all day. All the round plugs are made of salvaged Amboyna wood from Indonesia, I am in love with the variety of colours of this wood, and I think the rounds add a wonderful random pattern and movement to it. I opted not to fill in the voids left from bark inclusions because I wanted to keep an element of the natural to the piece, because whenever something is made from wood we shouldn’t forget that this was once a beautiful living organism.
